Psychological Fitness is Like Physical Fitness – Maintain it or Lose it

REBT’s psychological fitness is like physical fitness. You need to maintain your psychological flexibility, your non-extreme thinking, and your self-acceptance for those inevitable times you mess up.

Here are four good beliefs to call to mind each day:

1. I want what I want, but I never absolutely have to have what I want.

2. When adversity occurs in my life it is bad or even very, very bad but not awful. Awful means limitless bad and tends to lead to self-defeating and paralyzing emotion.

3. The price of achievement is discomfort. It is struggle for me to pay this price but I can stand discomfort and it is worth tolerating as I have goals I wish to achieve.

4. When I mess up that is bad and it is in my best interest to acknowledge the negative thing that I did. However, having done a bad thing does not make me a bad person and I can accept myself warts and all.
