REBT is a cohesive self-help theory for managing our emotions and behaviors, which was created and refined over Albert Ellis’s 60-year clinical career. At first glance, it seems like a straightforward approach, chock-full of practical ideas to implement. Although this is true, effective use of REBT requires an accurate understanding of its core ideas and strategies. For example, REBT is a cognitive behavior therapy that emphasizes the importance of deeper-level cognitions, referred to as basic attitudes. REBT targets two types of attitudes for change. It targets rigid attitudes and extreme secondary derivatives, which follow from these rigid attitudes.
REBT is A Distinctive Form of CBT with Unique Advantages
REBT helps people modify their rigid and extreme attitudes to produce adaptive functioning in adversity. Like other forms of cognitive behavior therapy, REBT teaches people to change their thinking. However, you need to appreciate the distinctive components of this versatile theory of self-therapy. People often do not understand REBT accurately and confuse its essential ideas with other related CBT therapies.
Avoid Initially Targeting Your Inferences and Hunches While Striving for Healthy Negative Emotions
People sometimes target inferences, private hunches, or automatic thoughts extracted from the observable data of a situation, instead of the deeper, rigid, and extreme attitudes. People frequently think that we in REBT are trying to help people lessen their emotional disturbance instead of assisting people to adopt flexible and non-extreme attitudes that allow them to have healthy negative emotions. The types of thoughts emphasized in REBT and the healthy negative emotions we emphasize are essential points of understanding needed to do productive self-therapy.
Learn How to Examine and Modify Unhealthy Attitudes
People also often do not accurately understand the process of disputing and examining their rigid and extreme attitudes, and automatically jump to creating an alternative attitude. Furthermore, people develop healthy attitudes that either do not match the rigid and extreme attitudes underpinning their emotional disturbance or create ineffective or partial attitudes. These errors can result in the individual attempting self-therapy, yet struggling to achieve adequate emotional or behavioral change given their effort at self-help.
Understand the Foundational Ideas of the Tool for Maximal Leverage
Like any tool, the artisan must first learn how to use it properly before they can solve a problem with their tool. REBT allows humans to face life’s difficulties effectively and flourish. REBT can bring out the best in the individual who takes the time to develop an accurate understanding of it. To this end, Dr. Windy Dryden and I will offer a five-hour masterclass on Saturday, May 24th at 10 AM in New York, open to everyone, not just professional clinicians. Helping people learn the foundational ideas and strategies is the initial step in overcoming the human inborn tendency to disturb ourselves and defeat our ends. This masterclass promises to be beneficial because it will combine four didactic presentations, a demonstration by Dr. Dryden with a volunteer, and a question-and-answer period at the end of the day, where he and I will answer attendees’ questions and clarify important ideas. You can learn accurately about REBT and its distinctive features through books, recorded audio and video, and live didactic presentations. A multimethod approach to learning REBT will likely lead to the best results in your self-therapy journey. We hope you can join us for a day that promises to be highly informative for all individuals, professionals, or non-professionals, seeking an accurate understanding of this powerful system of ideas.
In this five-hour class, open to nonprofessionals and professionals in mental health counseling, two experts in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Dr. Windy Dryden and Dr. Walter J. Matweychuk, will present the foundational concepts and key self-help strategies of REBT. Attendees will learn how to apply this information to navigate life’s frustrations, losses, failures, and other problems of everyday living. This is an educational experience, not a therapeutic service.
